Amy Dilling is a volunteer that anonymously bakes birthday cakes for foster children. “For Goodness Cakes” is a non-profit organization. This organization matches bakers, like Amy, with foster children soon have a birthday.

Birthday cakes were always a big deal in our family, and they weren’t ordinary- like a cake that looks like a huge hamburger, sea monster, a stack of pancakes. One of my earliest memories was an ice cream cone cake my mom made when I was three. I’ve continued the tradition with my boys. They’ve enjoyed pirate ships, construction zones, and an army tank. Baking is one of my all-time favorite hobbies and I’d bake every day if I could! It’s my way of showing I care.

A few months ago, I was searching for a new volunteer opportunity and found “For Goodness Cakes”. It’s a non-profit in which volunteers bake cake for children in foster care or who are at-risk. It broke my heart that some kids miss getting a birthday cake. Sure, it’s just sugar, butter and flour, but really it is an acknowledgment of the special day you were born- it’s a celebration of your existence.

The first cake was a cookie cake with a football theme. It took two tries, but my boys were happy to eat my failed first attempt. We didn’t give up, and it turned out just right! I love having the opportunity to make someone’s birthday extra sweet. Knowing my cake puts a smile on a kid’s face is why I bake!
